The use of supplements among adults in the United States was at an all-time high in 2019 with 77% reporting some use of daily supplements, according to The Council for Responsible Nutrition. With the vast amount of scientific research around the effectiveness of supplements, how do we know the best supplements to take? Scientific studies evaluate the effectiveness or effects of an herb, mineral, or vitamin; however, they don’t evaluate specific brands. So, a study might test the effectiveness of Zinc to strengthen the immune system but the study doesn’t evaluate the effectiveness or quality of various brands of Zinc that may contain other ingredients. More importantly, how can we trust particular brands, companies, and sources given that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration regulates dietary supplements as food, and not as drugs?
