What Are The Best Ashwagandha Brands On The Market Today?

These days, it seems like everyone is looking to natural supplements for ways to improve their overall health and performance. Ashwagandha fits the bill here, and is seeing a surge in popularity as DTC brands with slick marketing promote the supplement as both an adaptogen and nootropic. But what is ashwagandha, and how is it beneficial to human beings?

What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is a natural herb that was used in ancient medicines from around the world. It’s categorized as an adaptogen because, in a number of words, it shows promise in helping your body manage stress. It’s also categorized as a nootropic because it may improve brain function, and reduce cortisol levels and blood sugar. Thanks to extensive scientific research, we know that ashwagandha:

Research also shows that ashwagandha is a safe supplement for most people, though women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or those with an autoimmune disease should consult a doctor before taking it. Likewise, with any supplement, you should always speak with your physician first — especially if you’re currently on medications.

With that out of the way, you should be feeling ready to start shopping for some ashwagandha! Though if you’re still not there yet, feel free to pop over to our explainers on adaptogens and nootropics. Below, we cover the best ashwagandha brands, and answer questions such as “What is KSM-66?” “What’s a cheap ashwagandha supplement?” and more with our ashwagandha brand review.

Our recommendation

Toniiq Ashwagandha

Toniiq Ashwagandha offers a potent ashwagandha capsule at a very fair price—plus it looks good on your bathroom cabinet

While we’re generally skeptical of less-established DTC brands with big marketing budgets, Toniiq Ashwagandha passes the smell test—and then some. These guys’ product is very fairly priced, potent, and vegan, which is about as much as you can ask for with an ashwagandha supplement.

NutriRise Ashwagandha Review

Great value

NutriRise Ashwagandha Review

Gluten free | Made with organic ashwagandha

Far and away, NutriRise offers the best value of all the ashwagandha supplements in this review. Though you’ll find similarly priced bottles in this review, with NutriRise, you essentially get the most ashwagandha for your money. We’re basing this on our comparison of the cost per 1,000 mg of ashwagandha for each brand in this review.

The Details

  • 120 capsules
  • GMP certified, certified organic
  • Third-party tested
  • Discount with subscription
  • Non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy-free
  • Made in the USA
  • Produced in FDA-registered facility
  • No fillers or binders

What We Like

NutriRise has sufficient transparency. The ashwagandha root they use is certified organic, and their capsules are made of cellulose, which is derived from vegetables. As well, NutriRise ashwagandha supplements are gluten-free and include organic black pepper to improve absorption.

What We Think Could Improve

While this product was highly rated, of the negative reviews, commenters mentioned increased blood pressure, increased anxiety, and upset stomach. To be fair, these are common ashwagandha side effects—especially if you take too much—according to our research.

About NutriRise

NutriRise is a Texas-based health and wellness company that focuses on providing high-quality nutraceuticals and natural products derived from the purest and most potent ingredients in an FDA-registered facility that undergoes third-party testing. NutriRise works with doctors to develop their products, which are backed by research and clinical studies.

Tribe Organics Ashwagandha Review

Best ingredients

Tribe Organics Ashwagandha Review

Proprietary & natural extraction process

Tribe Organics partners with KSM-66, an award-winning ashwagandha product that’s sourced from a proprietary extraction process which, Tribe claims, makes its supplement 10 times more effective than competitor supplements. You always want to look into claims like this, though—and to be fair, KSM-66’s website includes extensive peer-reviewed support for the efficacy of their product.

The Details

  • 90 capsules
  • Organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, vegetarian-friendly, kosher
  • Relies on KSM-66 ashwagandha
  • Made in the USA
  • Contain 5% withanolides—some ashwagandha brands don’t even tell you withanolide content
  • 10% subscribe discount on their website and “subscribe and save” on Amazon
  • Uses USDA-certified organic ashwagandha
  • Sustainably produced in a GMP facility and 3rd party tested
  • For every sale, the company donates $1 to a NGO that works with disadvantaged families

What We Like

Tribe Organics uses KSM-66, which, they claim, is a more potent form of ashwagandha. They get KSM-66 through a proprietary extraction process free of alcohol and any other chemical solvents. In fact, Tribe Organics claims that 300 mg of KSM-66 is comparable to the effect of 3,000 mg of competitor ashwagandha supplements. We like the sound of all that, but as is unfortunately the case with the supplement industry at large, it can be extremely difficult to sort the fake from the genuine. That said, KSM-66’s website provides a number of legit, scientific studies showing the comparative advantage of KSM-66 over traditional ashwagandha supplements. This does give us at the Unwinder some confidence that KSM-66 is better than other types of ashwagandha.

What We Think Could Improve

Tribe Organics is a great option, but that does come at a cost—their higher price. Other brands don’t use vegan-certified capsules (Vcaps), instead using magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide as part of the manufacturing process. Tribe doesn’t—and according to Tribe, that is why their product is more expensive.

About Tribe Organics

Tribe Organics is a Bronx-based natural supplements brand that believes in not just transparency, but in giving back to the community. In addition to featuring higher potency ingredients, the brand also prioritizes the use of traditional ayurvedic methods to treat modern problems. Tribe Organic makes charitable work a cornerstone of their mission, using proceeds from their profits to support the international NGO Education for the Children.

Havasu Nutrition Ashwagandha Review

Good value

Havasu Nutrition Ashwagandha Review

Paired with artichoke extract

Havasu Nutrition’s Ashwagandha is a straightforward, middle-of-the-road option. If you’re looking for a no-frills approach to this type of supplement, consider Havasu’s—their prices are fair, the company is trustworthy, and they add artichoke extract, which may help absorption and act as a digestive aid.

The Details

  • 90 capsules, per bottle 2 capsules
  • Discount subscription
  • Third-party tested
  • Manufactured in FDA-registered facility
  • 100 mg artichoke extract included

What We Like

Havasu Nutrition is a trusted brand that brings their attention to detail to their ashwagandha supplements. We like that the total dosage per serving (1,000 mg) stays well within the daily recommended range. And if you’re looking for an ashwagandha supplement with more benefits, then Havasu Nutrition’s version includes 100 milligrams of artichoke extract in every serving (2 capsules). Artichoke is an antioxidant that may help improve absorption and act as a digestive aid.

What We Think Could Improve

A common complaint we saw when reviewing Havasu Nutrition’s supplement was that many people noted side effects. These ranged from minor complaints about not liking the taste or smell of the supplements, to stomach upset and difficulty concentrating. However, while we did note that some people complained that they simply weren’t seeing any effects at all, remember that it usually takes a full month for you to begin to see the effects of taking many supplements, ashwagandha included.

About Havasu Nutrition

Havasu Nutrition is a holistic natural brand that prioritizes health supplements for improved physical and mental health. The brand is centered around easy-to-use product offerings such as gummies and powders that can be mixed into drinks or sprinkled on foods.

Toniiq Ashwagandha Review

Great deal, very potent

Toniiq Ashwagandha Review

Contains 10% withanolides | Wild harvested

Despite the slick product packaging, Toniiq offers one of the most potent ashwagandha supplements in this review, and at a great price per 1,000 mg of ashwagandha.

The Details

  • 90 capsules per bottle
  • Discount for subscribing
  • Contains 10% withanolides
  • Wild harvested
  • Black pepper to improve absorption
  • Vegan-friendly, gluten-free, wheat-free
  • No preservatives

What We Like

We like that Toniiq’s Ultra High Strength Ashwagandha Capsules is one of the few in our roundup that is vegan-friendly. As we’ve noted in other brands, varying additives or ingredients — while ayurvedic in nature — can make a product incompatible for strict dietary demands. We also like that of the brands that highlight a withanolides composition, this brand features a higher amount with 10%. And we also like the idea of the ashwagandha being wild harvested as it can help allay fears some people might have over the use of pesticides or growth treatments.

What We Think Could Improve

While we like the fact that this is a potent ashwagandha supplement, the total milligrams per serving is 5,000. This is extremely high and more than four times the recommended amount. And through our research, we found that one of the most common negative reviews was that these supplements were too powerful. Common complaints included upset stomach, vomiting, and even dry heaves.

About Toniiq

Toniiq is an online herbal supplement retailer that focuses on using modern patented extraction methods to create products that offer a superior potency. Their formulations rely on the finest naturally-derived ingredients sourced from around the world and are produced in higher concentrations for improved absorption and efficacy.

Organic India Ashwagandha Review

Bulk sizes available

Organic India Ashwagandha Review

Certified organic

Organic India offers the biggest bottle on this review—120 capsules. This bulk size doesn’t come with a bulk price (per 1,000 mg of ashwagandha), though, and we see this as an opportunity for improvement.

The Details

  • 90 capsules per bottle
  • Kosher and halal certified
  • Vegan
  • Discount if you subscribe
  • USDA certified organic

What We Like

We like that this is the only ashwagandha supplement brand in our round-up that isn’t just Kosher but is also Halal certified. Additionally, this option is also vegan-friendly, USDA-certified organic, gluten-free, and non-GMO. And with only 400 milligrams per serving (2 capsules), we think this is a better starting option for those who are thinking of taking ashwagandha for the first time.

What We Think Could Improve

Some shopper reviews complain that they actually receive a different product than they order. However, it’s possible this is due to third-party sellers. If you’re thinking about going with Organic India Ashwagandha, you may want to play it safe and order directly from their website.

About Organic India

Organic India was founded in the 1990s by a group of people seeking spiritual enlightenment. The group was inspired by the spiritual teacher H.W.L. Poonja and eventually decided to create Organic India in northern India. Their focus was (and continues to be) to build a sustainable business model that would support the local agricultural economy in the region by providing training and education as a means of supporting self-sufficiency.
