Ashwagandha is an herbal supplement most known for aiding in reducing anxiety, although as you’ll see, it has other benefits. Ashwagandha was traditionally used in ayurvedic medicine, and was either brewed as a tea or mixed with milk. In modern supplementation, ashwagandha is usually sold as an encapsulated powder, but ashwagandha root tea is becoming more popular, and a greater variety is now available.
About Ashwagandha Root Tea
Ashwagandha is the common name for Withania somnifera, a plant in the nightshade family. Supplements only contain the powdered root of the plant. Historically, ashwagandha had many uses in the drier regions of India. Now, ashwagandha is mainly used as an anxiolytic globally.
Ashwagandha tea is sold in two forms: in tea bags, and as a powder that you would mix with hot water.
In either form, it may be mixed with other ingredients for flavor or added effect. Ashwagandha alone isn’t very flavorful, so with pure ashwagandha products, you’ll probably want to combine them with another tea for a tastier drink.
How To Make Ashwagandha Tea– Ashwagandha Tea Recipes
If sold in a tea bag, you can brew your ashwagandha like any tea. Keep in mind, however, that it may or may not be flavored.
If your ashwagandha is a powder, it’s probably unflavored and should be brewed with a normal tea bag ー unless you like the taste of ashwagandha alone, but most people don’t.
In either case, because ashwagandha contains both fat- and water-soluble components, you should mix a little bit of fat in – such as milk or a teaspoon of melted butter or coconut oil – to help it dissolve more thoroughly. A half teaspoon of coconut oil is usually enough for tea bags; the powder is often bulkier and may require a bit more.
You may find that non-dissolved ashwagandha powder can remain at the bottom of your cup after finishing the tea. Pour a little more water in your cup and stir a bit to drink it up so it doesn’t go to waste.
If you want to avoid the jitters from caffeinated tea, we recommend mixing your ashwagandha powder in with the brewed tea for a more calming energy. On the other hand, in the evening ashwagandha combines well with chamomile and/or valerian tea for inducing sleep.
If you’re looking for an ashwagandha tea recipe, we recommend the following:
