Using A Waist Trainer For Weight Loss

There are three main types of waist trainers used by women today:

  • Everyday Trainers – These are worn under clothing and provide compression with a latex core and hook-and-eye closures.

The use of waist trainers has become wildly popular in the weight loss world. Many women have claimed to see what seems like immediate slimming results after wearing their waist trainers for only a short amount of time.

Waist trainers, when properly fitted, help prevent your belly from sticking out but they also can enhance training as well. Waist trainers enhance workouts by increasing thermal activity in the abdominal region, causing you to sweat around your midsection. While wearing a workout band, you can complete several types of exercises including running, circuit training, aerobics, and strength training.

It might be uncomfortable for women who are just starting to have something wrapped around their abdomen, especially if it makes breathing slightly more difficult. To alleviate this discomfort women can adjust their waist trainers while first starting, but it will only be a matter of time before their bodies adjust to the hold, after which they can tighten the waist trainer even more.

How To Use A Waist Trainer

For the most part, waist trainers aren’t too difficult to use. However, they may feel a bit strange when trying them out for the first time.

To start, you’ll always want to read the instructions for your specific waist trainer prior to use. While some are intended for training, others should be worn throughout the day during more sedentary tasks.

Additionally, the instructions will guide you on how to use the waist trainer’s specific closure type so that you get the right fit each and every time. When first starting out, it may be best to have someone help you get into your waist trainer and help you take it off.

Typically, if you have a hook and loop waist trainer, then you’ll need to grab the waist trainer with one hand on each end and wrap it around your back so that the loose ends are facing forward. Then, take the end with the hook and hook it into the opposite end’s eye inside the belt. Now that it’s hooked, wrap the unhooked side across your stomach so that it sticks to the velcro. You’ll want to wrap it around as far as it can go without compromising movement or breathing.

If you purchased a hook and eye waist trainer, then you’ll need to fasten it from the bottom to the top. First, decide which row you want to place the hook in, and then place all remaining hooks into the eyes within the same row moving upwards. Just like the hook and loop style, you’ll want the waist trainer to be tight enough to provide compression, but not so tight that it restricts your breathing or ability to move.

Once you’ve put on your waist trainer for the first time, you’ll want to wear it for around 1-2 hours per day for the first week. This will allow you to gradually adjust to the fit and you can proceed to wear it for longer periods of time each week following. If you’re working out in your waist trainer, make sure that the fit allows you to perform all lifts and cardio without compromising your form. As soon as you’re done working out, make sure to run it under some water with detergent and then rinse it out completely. Next, set it out to dry on a flat surface and wait to use it until the next day so that moisture doesn’t get trapped inside.

Safety Of Waist Trainers

While there’s plenty of research on the dangers of traditional corsets (think Victoria era), only a few studies have been conducted on the side effects of waist trainers like those mentioned above. Corsets in the past were non-stretchable and were often bound so tightly that many women suffered from fainting, poor digestion, muscle atrophy, or even rib cage deformities.

However, modern-day waist trainers are not constructed in the same manner as historical corsets. In fact, many of them are easily adjustable and are available in multiple sizes and styles to enhance comfort. Generally speaking, most waist trainers are relatively safe to use for limited amounts of time as long as a woman is able to breathe normally and perform daily tasks without experiencing pain.

While one study found that participants experienced shortness of breath, sweating, and more pain while using waist trainers during training, it should be noted that these effects may not occur in everyone. Also, the study did not disclose which specific waist trainer was used so these results may not apply to other waist trainers.

Another study investigated the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of weight reduction using a very low-calorie diet (VLCD) and whether or not subsequent corset treatment could maintain weight reduction long term. This study required obese individuals to limit their caloric consumption to 800 calories per day for 3 months and to wear soft corsets for 12-16 hours per day, 7 days per week, for 9 months.
