For decades, the hourglass figure has been perpetuated as the ideal body shape on billboards, magazines, and social media. While most women may not have Kim Kardashian or Jennifer Lopez’s exact bodies, that doesn’t mean they can’t obtain comparable physiques.
There are several different methods that women can use to try to achieve this body shape – one of which is the waist trainer. Waist trainers serve as tightly worn girdles that can help create the appearance of the perfect hourglass figure and can help you lose weight through enhancing sweating with their thick fabric and multiple layers.
What’s great is that the majority of waist trainers today are made out of thick fabric and fibers that can be tightened or loosened to fit your body. Thus, most anyone can wear them and they’ve become quite revolutionary over the last few years.
Here, I’ll discuss exactly what to look for when choosing a waist trainer and review the 14 best waist trainers for women including options for the best waist trainer for plus size women as well.
How We Found The Best Waist Trainer For Women
There are several factors you need to consider when making a decision on which waist trainer to buy:
- Size: All waist trainers are going to feel somewhat tight when first using them. However, they certainly shouldn’t suffocate you or restrict your movement substantially. Always check each brand’s sizing guide to ensure that you select the right size for you based on your specific measurements. While one a size large in one brand may be just right, it might be too big in another. That’s why we tried to include as many waist trainers for women on our list that are available in a wide range of sizes and styles so that you don’t have to compromise on comfort.
- Adjustability: The waist trainers on our list are easily adjustable and many of them have several types of closure systems to enhance a secure fit. Some of the waist trainers use a hook and loop system which tends to be the most comfortable, while others use a hook and eye closure with several rows so that you can tighten the waist trainer once you’ve become used to the fit. Regardless of the type of closure, you’ll want to make sure that your waist trainer provides some degree of adjustability.
- Fabric Type: Typically, it’s best to use a neoprene waist trainer as it promotes sweating, is very comfortable, and is flexible. We’ve included waist trainers on our list that are at least 80% neoprene so that you get the best results possible without having to compromise on comfort and your ability to complete daily activities.
- Style: You’re not going to want to wear your waist trainer unless it looks appealing and has some character to it. That’s why we’ve included several waist trainers for women that are available in different colors and styles so that you can find the right one to match your personality and preferences. While some women don’t mind a standard black, hoop and loop waist trainer, others may prefer camo vest trainers or ones that come in bright colors.
- Back Support: Many women choose to buy waist trainers not only to facilitate weight loss, but also to provide lumbar support. Many of the waist trainers we’ve included in this review provide adequate back support through the use of flexible acrylic bones.
- Reputation: We included waist trainers that have an overall rating of 4.0 or better based on 1,000’s of consumer reviews. We made sure to read through both the good and bad reviews for each product and checked for comments about durability, comfort, and efficacy.

Using A Waist Trainer For Weight Loss
There are three main types of waist trainers used by women today:
- Everyday Trainers – These are worn under clothing and provide compression with a latex core and hook-and-eye closures.
- Workout Trainers – These are more durable than a regular waist trainer and have a hook and loop closure that allows them to be worn outside of clothing.
- Steel-Boned Trainers – These are more traditional in style, with flexible steel boning, and include tightening laces at the back.
The use of waist trainers has become wildly popular in the weight loss world. Many women have claimed to see what seems like immediate slimming results after wearing their waist trainers for only a short amount of time.
Waist trainers, when properly fitted, help prevent your belly from sticking out but they also can enhance training as well. Waist trainers enhance workouts by increasing thermal activity in the abdominal region, causing you to sweat around your midsection. While wearing a workout band, you can complete several types of exercises including running, circuit training, aerobics, and strength training.
It might be uncomfortable for women who are just starting to have something wrapped around their abdomen, especially if it makes breathing slightly more difficult. To alleviate this discomfort women can adjust their waist trainers while first starting, but it will only be a matter of time before their bodies adjust to the hold, after which they can tighten the waist trainer even more.
A woman’s expected results from using a waist trainer mostly depend on factors such as her workout plan, diet, and lifestyle. As such, using a waist trainer for weight loss is not a replacement for these crucial factors, rather, it should be used to supplement them.
Most women who have experienced noticeable, long-term results have reported wearing their waist trainers daily for 5-8 hours in total, both during training as well as before and after.
Benefits Of Waist Trainers For Women
When used properly, waist trainers offer the following benefits:
- Increase Sweating – Waist trainers are made of a material such as neoprene that is somewhat thick and creates a sauna-like effect. This results in increased sweating which, when paired with dieting and training, can result in weight loss and improvements in body composition.
- Provide Lumbar Support – Many waist trainers come with flexible acrylic bones on their backside which support good posture and relieve back pain.
- Aesthetic Enhancement – Waist trainers are designed to create an hourglass shape when worn as they compress your waist and abdomen. Some even come with U-shape support that provides a push-up effect.
How To Use A Waist Trainer
For the most part, waist trainers aren’t too difficult to use. However, they may feel a bit strange when trying them out for the first time.
To start, you’ll always want to read the instructions for your specific waist trainer prior to use. While some are intended for training, others should be worn throughout the day during more sedentary tasks.
Additionally, the instructions will guide you on how to use the waist trainer’s specific closure type so that you get the right fit each and every time. When first starting out, it may be best to have someone help you get into your waist trainer and help you take it off.
Typically, if you have a hook and loop waist trainer, then you’ll need to grab the waist trainer with one hand on each end and wrap it around your back so that the loose ends are facing forward. Then, take the end with the hook and hook it into the opposite end’s eye inside the belt. Now that it’s hooked, wrap the unhooked side across your stomach so that it sticks to the velcro. You’ll want to wrap it around as far as it can go without compromising movement or breathing.
If you purchased a hook and eye waist trainer, then you’ll need to fasten it from the bottom to the top. First, decide which row you want to place the hook in, and then place all remaining hooks into the eyes within the same row moving upwards. Just like the hook and loop style, you’ll want the waist trainer to be tight enough to provide compression, but not so tight that it restricts your breathing or ability to move.
Once you’ve put on your waist trainer for the first time, you’ll want to wear it for around 1-2 hours per day for the first week. This will allow you to gradually adjust to the fit and you can proceed to wear it for longer periods of time each week following. It’s typically best to increase your use by 1-2 hours each week until you reach 8 hours per day. Again, make sure to read the instructions for your specific waist trainer as not all of them are intended for use beyond a few hours per day.
If you’re working out in your waist trainer, make sure that the fit allows you to perform all lifts and cardio without compromising your form. As soon as you’re done working out, make sure to run it under some water with detergent and then rinse it out completely. Next, set it out to dry on a flat surface and wait to use it until the next day so that moisture doesn’t get trapped inside.
Safety Of Waist Trainers
While there’s plenty of research on the dangers of traditional corsets (think Victoria era), only a few studies have been conducted on the side effects of waist trainers like those mentioned above. Corsets in the past were non-stretchable and were often bound so tightly that many women suffered from fainting, poor digestion, muscle atrophy, or even rib cage deformities.
However, modern-day waist trainers are not constructed in the same manner as historical corsets. In fact, many of them are easily adjustable and are available in multiple sizes and styles to enhance comfort. Generally speaking, most waist trainers are relatively safe to use for limited amounts of time as long as a woman is able to breathe normally and perform daily tasks without experiencing pain.
While one study found that participants experienced shortness of breath, sweating, and more pain while using waist trainers during training, it should be noted that these effects may not occur in everyone. Also, the study did not disclose which specific waist trainer was used so these results may not apply to other waist trainers.
Another study investigated the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of weight reduction using a very low-calorie diet (VLCD) and whether or not subsequent corset treatment could maintain weight reduction long term. This study required obese individuals to limit their caloric consumption to 800 calories per day for 3 months and to wear soft corsets for 12-16 hours per day, 7 days per week, for 9 months. While individuals experienced weight reduction after one year of following a VLCD, the compliance was so poor for wearing corsets that its effectiveness in long-term weight reduction could not be evaluated.
While the results of the above study are certainly intriguing, it should be noted that most people who use waist trainers will not exceed 8 hours of use per day and not all users are obese. Thus, there’s a need for more studies that evaluate the use of waist trainers in a wider range of people and that examine the side effects of their use for shorter periods of time.
When it comes to the safety of waist trainers, we can say with certainty that it’s important to proceed with caution when wearing them. However, most individuals who follow the instructions for wearing their waist trainer and do not exceed several hours of use per day should not experience severe side effects. Of course, there’s a major need for future research in this area and, as such, we cannot say that waist trainers are perfectly safe or do not result in long-term side effects.

Waist Trainer FAQs
What Is The Best Waist Trainer For Women?
The answer to this question depends on a few factors. If you’re looking for a waist trainer that’s comfortable, easy to use, and has the best reputation, then Sweet Sweat is hands down the best waist trainer for women. If style matters most to you, then ALONG FITis a great choice as it comes in different colors and styles such as zipper vests and U-shape tanks. However, if you want a waist trainer that provides an incredibly secure fit but can be used by women of all sizes, then ECOWALSON should do the trick.
How Long Should You Wear A Waist Trainer?
Generally, it’s best to wear a waist trainer for no more than 8 hours a day. Most waist trainers will come with specific instructions for their use and many brands recommend starting off with 1-2 hours per day for the first week of use and then gradually working up to 8 hours per day after several weeks of use.
What Size Waist Trainer Should I Get?
Each waist trainer comes with its own sizing guide. As such, we always recommend picking the size that best matches the length of your waist. If you’re in between sizes, then it’s generally best to go up a size and then work your way down over time.
How Tight Should A Waist Trainer Be?
Your waist trainer should be tight enough to provide compression but it should not significantly restrict your movement or breathing. It will feel a bit uncomfortable the first few times you wear it, but after a few weeks of use your waist trainer should feel more like a standard compression garment.
