Benefits Of Treadmills

Treadmills are unique in that nearly everyone can use them. They’re great for walking, running, or jogging, and can be used by nearly anybody at any age (provided there are no underlying health conditions).

  • For one, treadmills can provide bone health support, as research shows treadmill exercise can increase bone mineral density and overall bone strength.
  • Another study found that treadmill training results in smoother joint kinematics compared to running and over-ground exercise, meaning the potential for less stress on your joints.
  • Also, whether you walk, jog, or run, treadmills activated many muscles of the lower body, such as the hamstrings, calves, quads, and glutes, leading to a great lower body workout.

Treadmill Exercise Resources

While you probably already know how to use a treadmill, it can still be helpful to brush up on your skills and perfect your form to prevent injuries. Below are 3 different types of treadmill workouts created by the Sunny Health & Fitness team.

  • The first treadmill workout is great for those who don’t run frequently on a treadmill and need to correct their form prior to extending their training sessions.
  • The second video provides instruction on how to do an incline treadmill workout safely and effectively.
  • The third video is a 10-minute HIIT session that’s ideal for those who want to fit in a quick but intense workout in their busy schedule.

FAQs About Treadmills

How Long Should You Run On The Treadmill?

The answer to this question depends on several factors such as your age, athletic background, current health status, and training goals. In general, people who only use treadmills for general cardio purposes, are older adults, or have a limited background in running should limit their running session to 30 minutes in order to avoid injuries or potential health complications. In comparison, those who are avid runners with years of experience in the sport, do not have serious health conditions, or are aerobically fit can generally run for up to 60 minutes without much concern.

However, it’s always best to consult with your physician to determine what the appropriate amount of time is for you to run on a treadmill.

How Long Should You Walk On The Treadmill?

The answer to this question is fairly similar to that of the above. However, since those who walk are less prone to injuries and serious health complications, most people can safely walk on the treadmill for up to an hour at a time.

In general, it’s best to gradually work your way up from a few minutes a day to your goal training time. If you eventually want to walk on the treadmill for an hour at a time but are just starting out, then we suggest starting at 10-15 minutes per session and then adding 10-15 more minutes every 1-2 weeks until you reach your goal.

How Fast Does A Treadmill Go?

Each treadmill has its own range of speed. Most of the treadmills we reviewed above have a speed range of 0-10 MPH. However, some models may go up to 12 MPH or more while others may have a limit of 7-8 MPH.
